- Council Member (2-year term begins in 2014): Jennifer Smith Maguire, University of Leicester
- Council Member, Student (2-year term begins in 2014): Sarah Cappeliez, University of Toronto
Frederick “Fred” Wherry is a cultural and economic sociologist who has spent the last two years researching how people who were invisible in the financial system establish a financial identity, and how those who are under-banked begin to enter the financial mainstream. While he continues work on that project, Fred serves as General Editor for the Encyclopedia of Economics and Society with Sage (expected 2015). He is a professor in the Department of Sociology and co-director of the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale, member of the policy board for the Journal of Consumer Research, and member of the Sociological Research Association.
Jennifer Smith Maguire is Senior Lecturer of Cultural Production and Consumption in the School of Management, University of Leicester (UK). Her research examines the construction of markets, tastes and value, with a particular interest in cultural intermediaries in the super premium wine markets of Australia, France and China, and the commercial fitness market in the US (the subject of her PhD at The CUNY Graduate Center). Jennifer is a member of the European Sociology Association’s Consumer Research Network, and looks forward to working on behalf of the Consumers and Consumption Section. She thanks the section membership for the opportunity.
Sarah Cappeliez is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto. Her research examines the cultural, identity, and consumption elements of food. Her dissertation looks at the ways in which terroir is used in the wine sector in France and Canada, and examines questions of value and cultural diffusion.
The council thanks the Nominations Committee, which included Ashley Mears, Boston University (Committee Chair); Kjerstin Gruys, UCLA; Cassi Pittman, Ohio State University; Jeremy Schultz, University of California–Berkeley; and Zsuzsanna Vargha, University of Liecester.
